Syria has been on the neocon “hitlist” since early 1990s. I recall Wesley Clark leaking a conversation he allegedly had with Paul Wolfowitz about widespread military provocation the Middle East. Neocons theorized that a “clean up of old Soviet regimes” (Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq) was necessary before the next great superpower, presumably China, challenged our regional and global dominance. That went pretty well, don’t you think? We’re batting .333, and China ended up with Iraq oil contracts after “investing” roughly $2 trillion borrowed from …… wait for it ……. the communist Chinese. We really showed those Russians.
