Woke is Broke

What does it really mean to be “woke,” and how can you tell if you’ve experienced it? Can you even spot it in others? Awakening isn’t something that happens overnight. It’s not a quick fix, a flashy moment, or some energy rush up your spine. Ironically, people who loudly claim to be “awakened” often miss the point entirely. True awakening is more like peeling back layers—each realization uncovers more to understand.

Being truly “woke” isn’t about acting superior or forcing your views on others. It’s about living in a way that encourages understanding and inspires change. An awakened person doesn’t preach—they show through their actions and mindset. Real growth comes from stepping into the unknown, planting seeds of insight, and embodying the changes you want to see. Judging others or locking yourself into one way of thinking? That’s not awakening. True wokeness is about living fully and engaging with the world, not shutting it out.

Instead of pushing your beliefs onto others, stay present and open to learning from different perspectives. We’re all students and teachers for each other. Awakening isn’t about isolating yourself or critiquing everyone else; it’s about embodying the values you talk about. If you’re seeking genuine awakening, remember it’s rooted in love, connection, and growth. Ask yourself: are you here to lift others up and support them, or are you just enjoying the feeling of being “better” than them? Awakening means connecting with something beyond our senses and living that truth every day.

Case in point: What was supposed to be a simple birthday treat devolved into the latest flashpoint after “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg implied that a New York bakery refused to take her order because of her liberal politics. It’s an accusation that the bakery has denied. Now, the store is claiming that an influx of orders has flooded its phone lines as local residents show their support for the small business.

I can’t help but wonder what cut Goldberg got from the spike in sales, all thanks to the free nationwide promotion.

Ancient curse: May you live in interesting times

“Title Nine” is a 1972 law that forbade discrimination against women in any educational institution in the country that accepted federal funding. In practical impact, it meant every school except Hillsdale and a few others.

The changes over time were dramatic – women’s sports, while never the equal of men’s in basketball or football, nonetheless offered opportunities for  women to compete, get scholarships, and have their sports funded. I have watched women’s sports, and the competition is as intense as any male counterpart. But no one with any sense imagines that women and men should directly compete.

Out of the closet, into our faces

As a youth growing up in Billings, Montana, I knew nothing about counterculture of gays living among us. The idea of two men kissing (and more) was abhorrent to me (still is), though two women … well, another story. In retrospect I think a good friend from my youth was a repressed homosexual. In his family, such behavior would have led to shunning, maybe even violence from the Dad. I came to think that repressed homosexuals can be dangerous, as the pent-up rage often translates to violence, domestic and otherwise.

I knew a woman (through my then-wife’s workplace) who married a man who after the vows went completely asexual on her, leading to divorce for cause, in that he could not/would not perform. I knew of a man, son of a prominent businessman, who might be thought of as a flamer, openly gay and probably trying to embarrass his dad with (perceived) abhorrent behavior. In the 1960s and 70s, this was all par for the course, the way it was. It was tough to be LGBT.

Woketa-woketa-queep-woketa-queep **

Target is now taking it in the shorts, so to speak, after going full woke with a line of clothing aimed at gays, transgenders, and most notably, children including infants. This from Epoch Times* Roman Balmakov:

This was Target’s 2023 “Pride Collection,” which included items such as onesies for infants with a bunch of different pro-gay and pro-trans slogans, books for children like “Bye Bye, Binary” and “What Are Your Words?”—which helped to instruct children on using transgender pronouns—chest binders being sold for girls, and female swimsuits that had a “tuck-friendly” label—meaning that the swimsuit has enough additional fabric to cover male genitals, worn by young boys who want to pretend that they don’t have boy parts.
