Reality

Free enterprise is a term that refers, in practice, to a system of public subsidy and private profit, with massive government intervention in the economy to maintain a welfare state for the rich.
Noam Chomsky

Capitalism will never fail because Socialism will always bail it out.
Nathra Nader (Ralph’s Dad, attributed by Ralph)

We do a lot of arguing here about various abstracts – see below. Dave Budge informed us in that thread that his philosophy, libertarianism, has not failed because it has never been tried.

I wanted to deal in something less abstract, something that is not only tried, but is always practiced in the real world, and not held out as some potentially beneficial abstract theory (if only we would come to our senses).

The quotes above are dead-on. Hard to dispute what is happening right before our eyes.

  1. What great example of socialist success do you have in mind? Most bright spots (like Sweden) have a heavy component of market capitalism.

Any system can run off the rails. Markets are better at self regulation than a planned economy.

  2. Any time you get a one sentence response from Mark, ya know you got him on the ropes, fred.

Mark needs to stop hiding behind senseless diatribes and tell us where, his system of oppressive government, have benefited its subjects on the whole.

  3. Oh bull – not hardly. Fred set up a false choice – between a “planned economy” (Soviet?) and “markets”, which is vague enough to mean nothing.

I advocate regulated capitalism. In case you haven’t noticed, the unregulated variety tends to run amok.

  4. They are odd entities – I think they were once government and were privatized – they were GSA’s and are now taxpayer owned again? Anyway, they were stockholder owned until recently.

And yet you offer some quotes chortling about the greatness of socialism, and say the quotes are “dead on”. I think you lean more towards the “regulated” and less towards the “capitalism”.
