The taste test

Blind taste tests have shown that people cannot tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi, or between Coors, Bud and Miller beers.

Let’s do a thought experiment: Suppose someone comes to this country after twenty years absence, not having followed our culture. Without knowing which party is in power, would that person be able to guess?

Don’t be so quick to answer – we’ve got six wars going (that we know of), massive deficits, attacks on social programs, extremely favorable taxes for the wealthy and double-taxation of the working classes, torture and secret prisons, death warrants issued by an unaccountable executive, and a progressive woman who was extremely popular and sensible, Elizabeth Warren, just bypassed for an appointment.

Would you know which party is in charge? Would it even matter?

  1. Not to rain on your parade, but I did a taste test in the Statistics course that I’m teaching this summer between Coke and Pepsi. They were given three tastes – and were not required to tell which ones were Coke and Pepsi, only to tell which taste was different from the other two.

In this taste test, 18 out of 25 students were able to tell the difference. That was eight standard deviations away from the mean of our test data (random dice rolls), showing that the odds that some knowledge of difference between the two products had an effect on the results of the taste test to be very, very high.

Now I’m going to read the rest of your post. šŸ™‚

    1. Goddamit Swede! I’m going to lay it out straight here, as you are immune to anything with the slightest bit of nuance: if you want to talk about bad old Democrats and wonderful Republicans, go blow your chow at ECW or Cowgirl, but leave me alone. They breathe that nonsense. I DO NOT TRUCK IN PARTY POLITICS. Got that?

      There. Kraljy-caps for you.

          1. Look at the graph DS.

Bush did indeed spend more and because of it lost the Oval Office, House and Senate.

            Obama has quadrupled W’s efforts.

            1. What do I learn by looking at graph? Does is confirm that the two parties differ on important matters? Bush left office with a $1.3 trillion deficit. No one planned that. You don’t know that, do you.

But deficits are a side issue. We’re well capable of handling the load, which is actually less than when Reagan was in office in terms of interest burden. The “crisis” is fake, but is being used as justification for further cutting back SS and MC. That’s all that’s at stake, and Obama is part of it.

You are so focused on D v R that I have to beleive that you’re getting personal validation out of it. That’s generally the case, like how I feel good when the Reds occasionally win a baseball game.

But you haven’t thought about it beyond that.

        1. You forgot to say “no disrespect.”

Craig – what benefits a man of your stature to lower yourself to such low jibes?

And when, if ever, do you deal with substance?
