Terrorists living among us

Orlando Bosch
Posada Cariles
On October 6, 1976, Cubana Airlines flight 455, final destination Havana, blew up in midair. All 73 aboard were killed. Among them were the Cuban national fencing team, young men just fresh off a victory in Venezuela where they had won 22 gold medals.

Over a million Cubans were part of the public funeral for the victims. To this day, 10/6 has the same resonance for Cubans as as 9/11 for Americans – senseless violence by ugly, evil people.

There are no mysteries about this crime. Two bombs were placed in the passenger compartment by Venezuelans* Freddy Lugo and Hernan Ricardo. Each was captured and convicted and sentenced to twenty years in prison in Venezuela. One is now a cab driver in Caracas, the other’s whereabouts unknown. Each man fingered Posada Cariles and Orlando Bosch as the masterminds of the crime. These two men have managed to escape justice, with US assistance, for many decades. Each now lives comfortably in Miami.

Bosch has been linked to over fifty acts of terrorism against Cuban civilians. He loves bombs, and is especially gifted in use of C-4 plastics. Posada was a member of the CIA in the 1960’s and 70’s and part of the Cuban-American brigade that attacked Cuba at the Bay of Pigs in 1961. Bosch was issued a full pardon by President George H.W. Bush in 1990. Who knows … Bosch-Bush – maybe they have common ancestors?

Said Bosch of the 73 victims that day: “There were no innocents on that plane.”

Cariles, speaking to the New York Times in 1998: “The CIA taught us everything, how to use explosives, to kill, to make bombs … they trained us in acts of sabotage.”

This is the face of evil; these are agents of death. Delving into real American history, it is remarkable how such crimes are right beneath the surface, and how little effort it takes to learn about them. And yet almost all Americans, even Floridians, know nothing of this monstrous crime, or that the perpetrators live among us in comfort.

What a country. What ugly and naked evil parades before us. And it is natural that rabid anti-Castro men pulled off this stunt. The Cuban-American community in Miami, prior to flotillas and other emigrations of normal people, was a Mafia. They were the former landowners, the upper crust that Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista served before the revolution.

But we would have to take an escalator down several flights to reach true depravity. Suppose that Fidel Castro had pulled off the Cubana 455 stunt to make Cuba appear to be a victim? What if his objective was to enable Cuban foreign policy in make war on its neighbors?

He did not. It would be easy, however, given the effectiveness of American propaganda, to convince most of us that he had done so. Even though the US is not the source of all evil in the world, we do our share. We define evil in the post-war era.

To this day, the United States government refuses to brand Cubana flight 455 as an act of terrorism. Most likely this is because the victims are unworthy of victim status. They were only Cubans, and Castro is evil.

  1. Castro is not evil. Socialism is evil. The ruling class will do anything to stop it because they can’t profit from it. If the ruling class could exploit labor under socialism then they would promote and support it. This is a historical fact.
