Uncommon valor

Julian Assange is a desperate man. He’s fighting extradition to Sweden, which at US behest is attempting to bring him there for the sole purpose of allowing his extradition to the United States. Sweden has not charged him despite his repeated offers to stand for questioning. If they do question him, they must either charge him or let him go. This is an indication of lack of evidence to bring charges.

Once here he’ll most likely be railroaded, imprisoned for life, and/or executed. (There’s a secret grand jury at work in DC as we speak preparing charges.)

His crime: Journalism. Naturally, Americans don’t recognize it.

In his latest move, Assange is under protection at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Ecuador’s president, Rafael Correa, closed down a US military base in that country, saying that he would allow it to reopen when Ecuador was allowed to put a base in Miami.

Uncommon!

Ecuador and the US have an extradition treaty, but such treaties do not apply to political prisoners. If Ecuador determines that Assange is a political prisoner then he might be allowed to live out his days there, as the US will never forgive his crime.

Or, we might bomb a few villages, kill some six-year old terrorists, and demand they give him up – standard US foreign policy.

Ecuador is a party to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a 1948 agreement among nations. It will be the basis for that country’s determination of Assange’s fate.

The stakes are very high. Assange has exemplified undaunted courage – to be right when my country is wrong. There is no more perilous position. He has risked his life, liberty and sacred honor for a cause. I honor him for his uncommon valor.

  1. As the post-cold-war “lone superpower,” or Empire, retreats and withers, it’s not surprising to see violent reprisals that target those with the timerity and courage to expose truth. Military power is all that’s left. As we double-down on armed violence worldwide, regional alliances are forming to supplant the power vacuum left behind.
