And there was much rejoicing …

From the New York Times:

Senator Max Baucus of Montana, the chairman of the powerful Finance Committee, will retire from the Senate after 36 years, the sixth Senate Democrat to head to the exits in 2014, according to Democratic officials close to the senator.

A Democratic official said former Gov. Brian Schweitzer of Montana, a Democrat and still one of the most popular political figures in the state, is leaning toward running for the seat, ensuring that Democrats still have a strong chance at retaining it. But Mr. Baucus’s departure means the Democrats will now be defending open seats in Montana, West Virginia, Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey and South Dakota.

  1. Mini was the WORST thing to happen to Montana in the last forty years! He pretty much single-handily DESTROYED the Dem party in Montana! He was a nutless wonder who controlled the Dem purse strings!

    1. If indeed guns are a real issue (I doubt it), then Baucus did right by his pretend constituents. I don’t know why he is stepping down, as he has done nothing that might offend his real constituency, his financiers. I can only imagine that it is his failure to pursue a public option, wildly popular, and the manner in which he stuffed health care “reform” down our throats. That leaves a bad taste. His polls are sagging. But who knows. Maybe he took a massive bribe to step down. That appears to be what Williams did.
