What leaders do in time of crisis

They act.

Meanwhile, Obama gives good speech. He could end this shutdown this minute with an executive order. But he won’t. He’s part of it. In the end, he’ll bargain and give away more things important to his base. That’s who he is.

  1. There are clear constitutional limits on what can be done with executive orders. They orders cannot use any moneys not already designated for certain executive agencies. Meaning that while the President can sign an executive order directing the EPA to further regulate carbon emissions, he cannot sign an executive order that creates a new agency for the same purpose.

In other words, if the money isn’t there, there ain’t nothin’ he can do about it. And also, this shutdown and the oncoming debt ceiling crisis are ostensibly about Obamacare – not about government funding levels. I doubt he’ll give up the ship here. But we’ll see.

      1. That’s a whole other ball of wax. How do you imagine that might play out on investor confidence? Would that keep interest rates low, or would he have to emergency manage the banks as well?

It doesn’t sound easy or good.

        1. Well, they threatened Congress with emergency measures when the banks needed a bailout. At any time they’ve got some kind going, probalby since Nixon took office. He could invoke a state of emergency to keep all public welfare, public resource agencies like parks and land management running. Here in Colorado, road repair is halted. It’s not like we’re a bank or anything, but it seems a good way to run the government if there are obstructionists whose only purpose is to disrupt the country.

If he’s not part of the contrived emergency. I assume he is.
