Mark’s yearly poetry series

No disrespect intended towards Liz at all. I just don’t do this sort of thing, but liked what I ran across this morning from the author of Red Badge of Courage. The man had unusual insight even in his twenties (he died at age 28):

The Wayfarer
Stephen Crane
The wayfarer,
Perceiving the pathway to truth,
Was struck with astonishment.
It was thickly grown with weeds.
“Ha,” he said,
“I see that none has passed here
“In a long time.”
Later he saw that each weed
Was a singular knife.
“Well,” he mumbled at last,
“Doubtless there are other roads.”

  1. Stephen Crane was a favorite of my Mom’s. I know that particular poem from being showed it in my childhood. I still have the book somewhere. Very cool post, Mark.
