Influence Peddling

Just for the record, according to Open Secrets, to date John McCain has taken in $19,560,538 from the financial sector – Wall Street investment banks, mortgage, savings and loan and insurance companies. That’s something we ought to be concerned about – that sector obviously wants special legislation (Social Security privatization?) and freedom from regulation. Those contributions are really a large collection of bribes from industry executives and PAC’s. McCain needs to be watched closely.

Which is why we have two parties. One keeps an eye on the other. Obama is watching McCain and will pounce on something like this. Influence peddling will be an iss ….. oh, hold on here. Strike that. Maybe not. Obama has taken in $22,501,165 from that sector. Guess he won’t be watchdogging.

Well, at least there’s Ralph Nader. At $30,071 he’s either cheaply bought or independent. He’ll use that money now to buy advertising on CNN … oh, wait. Probably not. CNN is not cheaply bought either.

  1. What I find most interesting is that OHB has taken more monies from “Big Oil” than JM.

    Via Open Secrets:

“Through June, Exxon employees have given Obama $42,100 to McCain’s $35,166. Chevron favors Obama $35,157 to $28,500, and Obama edges out McCain with BP $16,046 vs. $11,500. McCain leads the money race with nearly every other top giver in the oil and gas industry, though — Koch Industries, Valero, Marathon Oil, Occidental Petroleum, ConocoPhillips, the list goes on. (You can see detail on all these companies in the spreadsheet linked below.) McCain also has a big edge with Hess Corp. — $91,000 to Obama’s $8,000 — which has gotten some attention. And, overall, McCain’s campaign has gotten three times more money from the industry than Obama’s has — $1.3 million compared to about $394,000.

Comparing Obama’s and McCain’s financial ties to the oil industry, there’s no question that McCain has benefited more from the industry’s contributions, just as his Republican Party has for years and years. But Obama’s edge with the oil producers Americans know best — and might be cursing most these days — makes it harder for him to continue to tar McCain as the industry’s darling. Still, this chart shows vividly how the industry’s support for McCain’s candidacy has surged in the last few months.”

No doubt oil co. contributions have increased after the flip flop on off shore drilling, and the softening on ANWR. But still OBH has recieved more monies from the largest co.s in the world vs. smaller wildcatters and risk takers who would benifit most from open drilling.

P.S. I restrained from linking, wanting not to offend you.

  2. This link offends me – while I know that large industries have long sought to have an ‘in’ with both parties, and that both parties get their money from basically the same sources, Open Secrets says that the oil sector favors McCain by $1,394,033 to $398,765 for Obama. Even MSM has put that story to bed.
