I disregard such news as manipulation, and look to see what is not reported while such stories grab headlines. Suggestions would be useful as I don’t really have time to look for real news today.
________
Speaking of news management, which does not happen in the land of the free, Glenn Greenwald was scheduled to testify before an informal hearing chaired by Alan Grayson on the NSA wiretaps.
But as Grayson said, “Obama developed a sudden and newfound interest in House Democrats and scheduled a meeting with them for that same time.” The hearings were canceled. [Politico Link.]
Obama is not known to go to Capitol Hill for anything, much less unannounced and impromptu. See how it works?
A distraction from new Benghazi revelations.

Was going to link FOX but resisted and went with CNN.

Benghazi was obviously a US covert operation of some kind, and details emerge now and then but there has not (and never will be) an investigation, as people who get too close to these things have car or small plane accidents, heart attacks, or are murdered in some other fashion. For you to inject partisan politics into it, however, is merely dealing with surface phenomena.

FOX and CNN merely offer the same product with different packaging. Both keep their viewers in the dark. CNN appears to be a direct conduit from Langley to us. FOX is probably the same, though I do not watch it. Or CNN for that matter.

I don’t think CNN would do this story.

I think you’re missing the point. Each audience has different expectations. Each network feeds those expectations. Neither audience gets any real news.

Who doesn’t need a distraction right now? Last week’s rasor-thin House vote, and now this: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2013/08/01/198356/with-snowden-now-free-in-russia.html#.UfwmPaxcWCk
And Obama has a scheduled meeting with Russians ….soon. Dragnet-style domestic spying is never popular. Public opinion is highly volitile on this one.

Even McClatchy is questioning the closures. I think all the ambassadors and their staff wanted to go on extended vacation. August in the mid east must be so awfully unbearable, even with air conditioning. Oh yeah, and that saber rattling thing…

I wrote more about this a while ago under Syria Update. We know only what we are told, and according to Pogie, that is enough, as everything else comes from disreputable sources.
