Profiles in courage

Don Progreba, Democrat, does not seem to understand why it is important for a politician to fight for the things he believes in while holding office.

Jimmy Carter turned out to be quite a man of peace, after leaving office. Al Gore turned green, after leaving office. Bill Clinton became a professional liberal, after leaving office.

At least Republicans like Conrad Burns and George W. Bush have the decency to remain the right wing hacks they were while in office, after leaving office.

  1. What makes you think all you mentioned above were not true to their authoritarian-right selves while in office? Almost all elected in 2012 to national office are authoritarian-right to one degree or another.

    1. Nothing makes me think that. Quite the opposite. I know what snakes they are. But after leaving office they reinforce illusions for base by posing as something else. It perpetuates the cycle.

    1. Interesting. We are in the desert and talk about snakes, and while here and trying to get other music out of my head, I thought of Al Wilson:

      Instead of saying thanks, the snake gave her a vicious bite

      “I saved you,” cried the woman
      “And you’ve bitten me, but why?
      You know your bite is poisonous and now I’m going to die”
      “Oh shut up, silly woman,” said the reptile with a grin
      “You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in
      “Take me in, tender woman
      Take me in, for heaven’s sake
      Take me in, tender woman,” sighed the snake

      That line, “you knew damn well …” Has stuck with me through the years.
