Torture/terrorist training center on Cuba mainland could jeopardize normalization of US/Cuba relations

Cuban President Raul Castro is demanding closure of Guantanamo and return of land illegally seized as part of the normalization of relations between the two countries.

The Obama administration has said it wants reform of Cuba’s one-party system as a part of the process, making no offer of any reforms in the US one-party system in return.

  1. Related.

“A traditionally Catholic country, Cuba underwent significant anti-Christian persecution beginning in 1959 with the Cuban Revolution and Fidel Castro’s rise to power, with many priests jailed or exiled. Now, as relations with the Vatican are beginning to thaw, the first new church in 56 years is being built in in Sandino, a remote village in the westernmost province of Cuba, Pinar del Río.”-Thomas Williams PHD.

  2. Hmmm … You Googled a list. Catholics were often at odds with communist regimes because church and imperialists collaborated. You know … First come the missionaries, then the corporations and if there is resistance, marines. So naturally Castro tried to keep Church out, along with CIA and RFA and all the other swarming agents of Wall Street and London.

      1. They lived, farmed, hunted there. Dogs in a manger, as imperialists like to say.

Interesting, it appears you’re OK with theft of land and resources, genocide as well, when local folks get in the way of missionaries, corporations, and marines.

        1. Seems to me when African leaders repossessed their land back from the European interlopers they ransacked the buildings, looted the equipment, and left the fields succumb to weeds.

In a way like Ferguson, MO.

              1. But you don’t understand that your viewpoint is necessarily skewed, measuring as you do what the black population should want in terms of what whites want. Your numbers are essentially meaningless unless put in some greater perspective.

For instance, you could take a chunk of meadow out of the Bob Marshall and turn it into a corn field, and by the numbers, you’d have something better than you had before. It would be producing income for some white dude. And you’d be wrong.

  3. Interesting read on the Maori, New Zealand’s Natives.

“Māori on average have fewer assets than the rest of the population, and run greater risks of many negative economic and social outcomes. Over 50% of Māori live in areas in the three highest deprivation deciles, compared with 24% of the rest of the population.[94] Although Māori make up only 14% of the population, they make up almost 50% of the prison population.[95]

Māori have higher unemployment-rates than other cultures resident in New Zealand [96] Māori have higher numbers of suicides than non-Māori.[97] “Only 47% of Māori school-leavers finish school with qualifications higher than NCEA Level One; compared to 74% European; 87% Asian.”[98] Although New Zealand rates well very globally in the PISA rankings that compare national performance in reading, science and maths “…once you disaggregate the PISA scores, Pakeha students are second in the world and Maori are 34th…”[99] Māori suffer more health problems, including higher levels of alcohol and drug abuse, smoking and obesity. Less frequent use of healthcare services mean that late diagnosis and treatment intervention lead to higher levels of morbidity and mortality in many manageable conditions, such as cervical cancer,[100] diabetes[101] per head of population than non-Māori.[102] Although Māori life expectancy rates have increased dramatically in the last 50 years, they still have considerably lower life-expectancies compared to New Zealanders of European ancestry: in 2004, Māori males lived 69.0 years vs. non-Māori males 77.2 years; Māori females 73.2 yrs vs. non-Māori females 81.9 years.[103] This gap had narrowed by 2013: 72.8 years for men and 76.5 years for women, compared to 80.2 years for non-Māori men and 83.7 years for non-Māori women.[104] Also, a recent study by the New Zealand Family Violence Clearinghouse showed that Māori women and children are more likely to experience domestic violence than any other ethnic group.[105]”-Wiki.

    1. I am curious about them, and know nothing of the original infusion of white settlers. If like anywhere else, it was probably vilolent, and diseases foreign to the natives were introduced. The number of species gone extinct since the white settling is impressive. Whatever their situation before, it is highly unlikely their lives got better as they yielded to the invaders. Say what you want about the superiority of the white way, if you count health and happiness as accomplishments, Maori were probably doing OK before the New settlers arrived.
